Conversation Corner - Revolutionise your journaling with the 1/3/1 technique

Jack and Jill met at their favourite park bench, journals in hand.

‘Have you tried the new 1/3/1 writing rhythm in your gratitude journal yet?’ Jack said, opening his journal.

Jill nodded, a smile spreading across her face. ‘Yes, I have. It’s such a simple yet powerful way to structure my entries. How about you?’

‘Yep, I have tried it and live it,’ Jack said. ‘I love how it starts with one sentence to set the tone, often a gratitude prompt, expands with three sentences for deeper reflection, and then wraps up with a final sentence of gratitude. It really helps me stay focused.’

‘I agree,’ Jill said, flipping through her journal. ‘Using the rhythm makes my entries more concise and meaningful. It’s also great for capturing the essence of my daily experiences without feeling overwhelmed.’

‘Exactly,’ Jack said, leaning back on the bench. ‘I noticed that it helps me highlight the small moments and lessons in my day. It’s amazing how such a simple structure can bring so much clarity.’

‘And the best part,’ Jill said, ‘is that it keeps us consistent. I’ve found that following this rhythm makes it easier to maintain my journaling habit.’

‘I never thought about that, but now that you have said it,’ Jack said. ‘It’s like having a little guide to keep me on track. Plus, it’s flexible enough to adapt to whatever I’m feeling that day.’

‘That’s true,’ Jill said thoughtfully. ‘I’ve used it to reflect on everything from personal achievements to challenges I’ve faced. It’s really versatile. And starting with a gratitude prompt helps set a clear direction.’

‘It really is,’ Jack said, smiling. ‘I’m glad we’re incorporating it into our routine. It’s made a big difference for me.’

‘Me too,’ Jill said, lifting her journal. ‘Here’s to the 1/3/1 rhythm and all the clarity and gratitude it brings. Thanks for introducing it to our journaling practice, Jack.’

‘Cheers to that,’ Jack said, raising his journal. ‘Let’s keep exploring and growing together.’
